The CHOROS research proposal pertains to a subject relevant to both Humanities and the Arts. It aims to innovatively explore the acoustic dynamics of choral singing. Choral singing participation has been reported “as a complex system of combining social, artistic and creative, vocal and choral as well as organizational elements”, but is also important in terms of nested identities. As a vital cultural and artistic expression, choral singing not only facilitates cooperation, social interaction, and cultural diversity, but also poses unique challenges and opportunities in the realm of performance arts. The proposed study delves into the intricacies of choral ensembles performance, particularly examining the acoustic interplay among choristers and the influence of varying spatial environments.
By combining empirical and technologically advanced methodologies, this research aims to: enhance our understanding of the acoustic factors that influence choral performances in different performance spaces, explore chorister and choral conductor sound perception as well as cognitive and social skills regarding cooperation and function within an artistic context, prepare choristers for performances in different spaces by integrating choral singing and technology through the use of Extended Reality (XR), and investigate aspects of sung text intelligibility through the study of the choristers’ consonants synchronicity and vowel sound homogeneity.
The project thereby contributes significantly to the fields of musicology, music performance, musical acoustics and XR-aided instruction. Its outcomes are poised to offer groundbreaking insights into optimizing performances of small vocal ensembles, enriching both the performers' and the audience's experience, and advancing the theoretical and practical dimensions of performing arts studies. Finally, by uncovering more about chorister perception and the effect of acoustics, the CHOROS project effectively reinforces the community "treasure" that is the choir cultural phenomenon, thereby enhancing the communal and therapeutic benefits it can offer on a social level.
